1. What defines Chinoiserie wallpaper?

Chinoiserie is defined by its whimsical, nature-inspired imagery. Unlike standard geometric wallpaper, Chinoiserie designs typically feature winding branches, lush flowers (like peonies and magnolias), and exotic birds in flight. The style is known for being elegant and fluid, often looking more like a hand-painted mural than a machine-printed pattern.

2. Does the pattern repeat like standard wallpaper?

Most of the designs in this collection are Murals, not standard repeating wallpapers. This means the image spans the entire wall to create a non-repetitive, scenic view - much like a large painting. However, we are able to customize the design to match up seamlessly, so you can cover walls of any width without breaking the flow of the design.

3. Can I use Chinoiserie wallpaper in a bathroom?

Yes! Chinoiserie prints are incredibly popular in powder rooms and bathrooms. For full bathrooms with a shower, we recommend our Traditional Type II or Premium Peel & Stick Canvas materials, which are durable and moisture-resistant. As long as your bathroom has proper ventilation to handle steam, the wallpaper will hold up beautifully.

4. What is the difference between toile and chinoiserie?

While both styles are French-influenced antiques, they feature very different subjects. Chinoiserie focuses on East Asian-inspired nature scenes - think climbing vines, exotic birds, and pagodas - and is often colorful. Toile (or Toile de Jouy) typically depicts European pastoral scenes, such as farmers, picnics, or hunting, and is almost always monochromatic (e.g., blue ink on white background).
