Where Living Room Wallpaper Works Best
A living room rarely needs wallpaper on all four walls. Most installations here cover a single wall, and the wall you pick changes the result more than the pattern does.
Behind the sofa. The most-seen wall in the room, and the most forgiving to install - furniture covers the baseboard line and any unevenness where the wall meets the floor. Keep the pattern's main motif above sofa-back height so it is not cut off once the room is furnished.
The chimney breast. Papering only the fireplace wall gives the room a center without committing the whole space. Measure the breast on its own: it is often narrower than you expect, and a 24-inch roll may cover it in one or two drops.
Behind the TV. A patterned wall softens the contrast between a black screen and a flat painted wall. Mid-tone, lower-contrast designs hold up better here - high-contrast graphics compete with whatever is playing.
Full room. Living rooms with several window and door openings need more material than the square footage suggests, because every opening creates offcuts. Order the full project quantity at once - color can vary slightly between production runs.
Choosing Living Room Wallpaper Materials
Every design in this collection is available in more than one material. The four standard options are Smooth Vinyl Peel and Stick, Canvas Peel and Stick, Traditional Type II and Faux Grasscloth Type II. Other textures can be produced on request.
Peel and stick comes in Smooth Vinyl (semi-gloss, wipes clean) or Canvas (matte, woven texture, no glare). It is removable and repositionable during installation, which suits renters and anyone who expects to redecorate. It needs a smooth, clean, fully cured painted wall - it will not hold on heavy orange-peel or knockdown texture. Browse all peel and stick wallpaper.
Traditional Type II is paste-installed and commercial grade, with a Class A/Class 1 fire rating (ASTM E84). It accepts lightly textured walls and suits a living room that doubles as a client-facing space, a short-term rental, or any installation meant to stay. See our commercial wallpaper range.
All four materials print with GREENGUARD Gold certified inks. Samples are 12 x 10 inches. Rolls are 24 inches wide in 50, 75, 100 and 120 inch heights. Wall murals come as 120 x 75, 144 x 100 and 168 x 120 inches, ship as a matched set of 24-inch rolls, and carry a 1-inch vertical overlap for alignment. Custom sizing is available on request.
Living Room Wallpaper Ideas by Style
Pattern scale reads differently in a living room than in a bedroom or powder room, because you see the wall from across the room rather than from arm's length. Large-scale patterns and wall murals hold their shape at that distance. Small, tight repeats tend to flatten into texture once you step back.
For a room with a lot of natural light, botanical and boho designs keep the wall from reading as busy. North-facing rooms and evening-use living rooms carry moody and darker palettes well. For structure rather than pattern, geometric designs and faux grasscloth add depth without a motif. Chinoiserie and toile suit rooms with traditional millwork.
Order a sample before committing to a full wall. A 12 x 10 inch sample printed on the same substrate as the production run shows you the color under your own lighting, which is the part a screen cannot tell you.
